Volunteer Positions

  • Pre-Race
    • Food Drop: Mushers drop their food, fuel, and straw the day before race start. Volunteers are then needed to count the number of bags a musher has dropped for each checkpoint. We also need people with pickups and/or trailers to haul the food to each checkpoint.
    • Race Start Setup: Install tents, fencing, and banners.
  • Race Start
    • Dog Painters: Mark dogs that have been examined by a veterinarian.
    • Dog Handlers: Assist dog teams from the staging area to the starting chute.
    • Traffic Control: Stop traffic at road crossings in Glennallen for approaching dog teams.
  • Race Central
    • Phone: Answer calls from checkpoints, mushers' families, and race fans. Checkpoints will be primarily calling in race data (time in and out of checkpoint, number of dogs, etc). Race fans will be calling for the latest standings.
    • Data Entry: All race data is recorded in a spreadsheet and then posted on the website. No experience is necessary, but it helps (training provided).
    • Merchandise Sales: Sell apparel and other memorabilia at race central.
  • Checkpoints
    • Judge: Resolve questions and disputs concerning race rules. Aspiring judges will work with another judge for a year as a "judge-in-training."
    • Checker: Check each musher for the required gear upon entering a checkpoint and then call the information into race central. This position requires just some brief training but it's well liked by many because of the opportunity to meet all of the mushers.
